Steve Barr - Screen writer PLUS
Steve Barr recently moved to New Zealand after working for 16 years in the Hollywood system.
He has been a post-production scheduler and studio "suit" for Universal Studios, a development executive for indie financier SMASHfilms, and a feature screenwriter for Walt Disney Pictures.
As a founding member of SoCal Film Group, he has made over 50 short films that have screened at hundreds of film festivals around the world. He is currently writing the New Zealand film "Timeslow" for director Sally Tran and producing the American film "Newton's Cradle" with Polymath Pictures.
My topic will be about screenwriting as the foundation on which good movies are built. I'll probably show some film clips and then show the screenplay pages that those clips were created from, so the students come to understand that a writer invented everything on the screen. Hopefully the students who enjoy movies (I'm guessing almost all of them) will be interested in what it takes to invent those stories ... which ties back in to academic skills like grammar, spelling, creative writing, etc.
