'Libraries, Literacy and You'
ReaLM presented our third annual professional development day at the RSA, Palmerston North in June 2012. Over fifty school and public librarians specialising in children and young adult's libraries attended from all over the central and lower North Island.
The following sessions were presented on the day:
“21st century Non-‐fiction Collections” - Jan Watts - Library Advisor, National Library
“Best New Fiction for Years 6-‐10” - Bob Docherty - Literature Consultant
“Trends in Children’s Recreational Reading” - Rob Southam - Sales Manager and Books in Homes Manager, Scholastic New Zealand
“ePlatform by Wheelers Books” - Paul du Temple –Managing Director, Wheelers Books
“Literacy in the Reel World” - Steve Barr - Massey University Artist in Residence & Screenwriter
“Hiding the Vegetables” - Alan Dingley – Youth Librarian, Palmerston Nth City Library
"An Evening with Bod Docherty and Mark Sommerset" at the Youth Space, Palmerston North City Library.
This year we added another event to our calendar and hosted a great evening for the community. Bob with great pizazz recommended new fiction for students Years 6-10 and Mark told us all about being a self published author.
Literacy Tour of Manawatu Schools
We ran this event for the second year to promote reading and literacy by bringing authors and literacy experts from around the country into Manawatu schools.
We were able to offer 15 local schools the following literacy professionals to work with students:
Bob Docherty - Literature consultant
Mark Sommerset - author and publisher
Silver Dunlop - promoter and expert of Graphic Novels and Manager of The Badcave
Steve Barr - Screenwriter and former Massey University Artist in Residence
Kyle Mewburn - author
