ReaLM 2014
'Libraries, Literacy and You' Seminar Day
ReaLM presented the fifth annual professional development day at the Massey University Sport and Rugby Institute in June 2014.
Nearly fiifty school and public librarians specialising in children and young adult's libraries attended from all over the central and lower North Island.
To celebrate the fifth annual event for ReaLM we were excited to secure Brian Falkner, our keynote speaker at our inaugural event in 2010.
We also had an expert line up supporting him for a full day of learning:
Julia Marshall - Publisher: The Story of Gecko Press
Jill McGregor - Author: The Children of the Pacific series - Behind the scenes
Bob Docherty - Literature Consultant - What's new in kids books?
Miriam Tuohy - Librarian - Web tools for your library
ReaLMTalks - Alan Dingley (Youth Space Librarian) and Rex Wheeler (Principal at Manchester Street School) talked about 'Boys and Books'
Literacy Tour of Manawatu Schools
We ran this event for the fourth year to promote reading and literacy by bringing authors and literacy experts from around the country into Manawatu schools.
We were able to offer 8 local schools the following literacy professionals to work with students:
Brian Falkner - Author
Julia Marshall - Publisher and promoter of world class books
Bob Docherty - Reviewer and blogger, promoter of reading to children and young adults
NZ Post Book Awards for Children and Young Adults 2014
Earlier in the year ReaLM was appointed the regional coordinators for the annual event celebrating authors and books published in New Zealand for children and young adults.
ReaLM organised events in Palmerston North, Feillding and Ashhurst during the book awards Festival Week in May (see below).
We also coordinated a busy day in the Manawatu for author Paul Adamson (finalist and winner of the Non Fiction category).
Paul was first a special guest at the Boys Big Brekkie held at Youth Space in Palmerston North where local students got a chance to try some 'wild foods', listen to Paul talk about his experiences of hunting and becoming an author of 'The Beginners Guide to Hunting and Fishing in New Zealand'. This event was kindly sponsored by Hunting and Fishing Manawatu.
Next Paul visited three local schools during the day, again sharing his stories and advice about hunting and fishing, then returned to Palmerston North to attend a book signing at the Paper Plus store.
